Around five million Muslims live in Germany. The fasting month of Ramadan began on April 23 fo them. According to Islamic tradition, the Quran was sent down in the month of Ramadan, which is why this month is so important to Muslims.
In Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Eating after sunset is called iftar, which means breaking the fast, and is celebrated with family and friends. In Ramadan, “Iftar food” is distributed to the people in need in the mosques. "But this year everything is different," says Halide Özkurt (40) from Krefeld.
