More than 47 million cars on our roads cause bad air and high greenhouse gas pollution. The transport sector is responsible for almost a fifth of Germany's CO2 emissions.
Electric cars are supposed to change that because they are praised as "emission-free". Battery-operated electromobility should become the form of transportation of the future and make traffic completely climate-neutral by 2050.
At the same time, e-cars are already helping car companies to undercut the high EU CO2 emissions and offer a way into the future to a new automotive market of million.
But are electric cars really the lifeline for the environment and the climate? The story goes in search of traces.
