The west coast of Portugal is in danger: especially in the northwest of the country - in the Aveiro region - there is a desperate fight against the rise of the sea. Every year, environmental protection agency has to abandon fishermen's homes on the coast and relocate residents. People have to worry about being washed away, but many of them still want to stay in their homes, right on the beach.
In the meantime, the affected cities and municipalities are trying to solve the problem with buildings (protective walls on land and breakwater in the sea) as well as dismantling (demolition of houses) and measures to protect the natural dune landscapes. A sisyphean task.
